🌭 Ingredients
- Crescent Roll Dough or Puff Pastry Sheet Roll or Squares
- Mini Sausages — lil Smokies, Cocktail Sausages, Mini Wieners.
- Egg
- Sesame Seeds — white sesame seeds and/or black sesame seeds. The combination of both together looks the best.
🔪 How to make them?
This is a quick overview to help you get going. Your complete recipe with US and metric measurements can be found further below in the recipe card.
Step 1
Cut your crescent dough or puff pastry sheet into smaller squares. If your sheets are small squares, cut them further into two.
Use the length of your mini sausages as a reference for the size of your pastry square.
Step 2
Scramble an egg in a bowl and spread on one side of each square so that it will seal well afterward.
Place a mini sausage in each square.
Step 3
Roll each sausage in and seal.
Place pigs in a blanket on a baking sheet with some distance between each.
Step 4
Spread scrambled raw egg over that and sprinkle sesame seeds over your uncooked pigs in a blanket.
Bake as per instruction and let cool a bit before serving.

Mini Pigs in a Blanket Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 Crescent or Puff Pastry Dough Roll *see notes
- about 35 pieces Mini Sausages
- 1 Egg
- Sesame Seeds Black and/or White
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 Fahrenheit or 180 Celsius.
- If you use a pastry roll, slice your dough lengthwise and crosswise to create squares (watch video). The squares should be the size of your sausage. If you are using squares, cut them into half.1 Crescent or Puff Pastry Dough Roll
- Scramble the egg in a bowl. This will be your simple egg wash, and you will use it to seal the edges as well so that the pastry doesn't open up during the baking process.1 Egg
- Next, with a pastry brush, brush the egg wash on one side of each square. This is where you will seal it afterward.
- Place on each square a sausage. Take the pastry sausage bundle into your hand and wrap the pastry over the sausage. Seal it on the edge where the egg wash is. It will stick.about 35 pieces Mini Sausages
- Repeat the process to make mini pigs in a blanket.
- Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place all the pigs in a blanket next to each other with some distance because they will puff during the baking process.
- With your brush spread the egg wash over each sausage roll.
- Sprinkle sesame seeds over the pigs in a blanket.Sesame Seeds
- Bake for about 20 to 23 minutes at 350 Fahrenheit (180 degree Celsius) or until puffed and golden brown. Keep in mind that crescent rolls won't puff as much as puff pastry roll. I used puff pastry in the video and pictures.
- Let them cool a bit. Serve warm with a variety of dipping sauces.
Notes
- Use a roll of Puff Pastry or Crescent pastry, but you can also use pizza or pie dough. Just keep in mind that puff and crescent pastry will puff a lot, which I think is great but puff pastry crumbles too. I used puff pastry in the pictures and video.
- Use mini cocktail franks, mini wieners or lil smokies sausages.
- I like to use white and black sesame seeds because it looks better. Feel free to do it your way.

📜 Variations
Instead of crescent/puff pastry dough, you can use the following doughs:
- Pizza dough or even instant no-yeast pizza dough will do.
- Pie dough
Add the following to your pigs in a blanket before you roll them in and bake the piglets:
- Cheese Slice
- Fresh or dried Herbs — i.e., Marjoram, Oregano, or Basil.
- Mustard — Dijon mustard or similar.
- Bacon Slice
- Jalapeños fresh or pickled Jalapeños.
- Caramelized Onions
- Horseradish shredded
Switch your topping by using the following spices or seeds:
- Everything Bagel Seasoning
- Black Poppy Seeds — white poppy wouldn’t be suitable because they taste differently.
- Nigella Seeds — Also known as kalonji seeds
👁️ Dipping sauces
Treat those babies just like hot dogs, and serve along a set of sauces to entertain your guests.
I can recommend classic sauces such as Ketchup, a homemade mayo and mustard sauce.
But spiced sauce variations also make for a great change. This includes sriracha mayonnaise, curry mayonnaise, curry ketchup, honey mustard sauce and maple mustard sauce.
You can go all crazy too with ranch dressing and BBQ sauce.
🍱 Storing
Leftovers
You can store leftovers in an airtight container in your fridge for up to 2-3 days.
To warm up again, simply place them into your oven and reheat them for about 5 minutes on a moderate heat setting.
I don't recommend reheating mini pigs in a blanket in a microwave because the dough will get soggy.
Freeze
Raw and unbaked prepared pigs in the blanket can be frozen on a sheet pan.
Once hard frozen, stack them over each other in a freezer friendly container or in a freezer bag and keep frozen until further use.
To thaw, place in the fridge overnight OR place them with a distance to each other on a baking sheet and bake as per recipe instructions + add about 10 to 15 minutes of baking time to it or bake until golden.
