📕 What is Curry Ketchup?
Curry ketchup is a German invention. It's used like regular ketchup as a dip for french fries etc.
It's inspired by the world-famous German Currywurst.
The sauce used to make this sausage street food snack is mainly made with ketchup and curry powder. Hence why Curry Ketchup!
Curry powder is a spice blend in the West. It's not an Indian Masala spice blend, but rather a British invention. The Germans made it a trendy kitchen pantry must-have!
Stores in Germany and Austria sell ready-made Curry Ketchup and it's hard to find it anywhere else. You might have spotted it in Aldi or Lidl.
I realized that when my french cousins asked me to bring some back to France. I did that and gave them my copycat recipe for quick homemade curry ketchup too.
🥣 Ingredients
So this recipe is super straightforward and comes close to the Hela and Heinz versions.
Here is what you need.
- ketchup - I use storebought but you can use homemade ketchup too
- curry powder
- black pepper
In Germany, you get different heat grades of curry ketchup. Regular, hot, or extra hot.
To make your homemade curry ketchup hot or extra hot, add ground cayenne pepper to your dip.
🔪 How to make it?
This is an overview, the adjustable recipe is located in the recipe card with US and metric measurements.
Step 1
Place ketchup in a small mixing bowl.
Add your curry powder and black pepper.
Step 2
Combine all ingredients into a well-blended cold dipping sauce.
🍴 Uses
We use our curry ketchup just like regular ketchup.
- french fries
- hot dog
- burger
- schnitzel
Paul likes ketchup with pasta. So he uses it that way too.
You can also make currywurst with this dip. Just switch the ketchup with the curry ketchup and reduce the quantity of curry powder and black pepper.
We also love serving it along with curry mayonnaise, especially with imitation crab sticks.
🍱 Storing
Once you mixed your dipping sauce, use it up ASAP or cover it with some clean wrap to prevent the dip from hardening on top.
The best option is to store it in a small bottle or container. That way the sauce will be good for weeks, just like regular ketchup.
