The Hoosier stew is a soul-warming dinner meal prepared with green beans, potatoes and smoked sausages.
Simple and wholesome, it's a great dish to cook up when you seek food inspiration.

TL;DR
The Hoosier stew is a staple in Indiana, and it is mostly called that way by German descendants who settled there.
Fun fact, the people of Indiana are nicknamed Hoosiers and that is where this term emerged.
You might know this dish simply as a green bean, potato, and sausage stew. Essentially, the smoked sausage does all the flavoring, and the veggies add a healthy element to it.
You will love it if you need to prep a meal last minute or if you want a soothing hot soup bowl after a long day at work.
Ingredient Notes
- Green Beans — I use frozen green beans from our garden. You can use fresh ones or canned green beans as well. Alternatively, use or mix in wax beans or purple beans.
- Onions — White or yellow.
- Garlic — fresh.
- Potatoes — use your favorite potato variety. Yukon gold are great all-purpose potatoes. Russet tend to be starchy, which will thicken the stew and the potatoes will break apart.
- Sausages — A decent smoked sausage of your choosing, such as a Kielbasa. This is one of your main stew flavor-givers. I used smoked Frankfurter sausages.
- Broth — Beef or chicken broth.
- Oil or Butter
- Salt & Black Pepper
- Water
This is not a stew that contains many seasonings. In fact, the stew is blander, compared to some of my other stew and soup recipes on this space.
To make it flavorful, get quality smoked sausages. It that isn't enough, add a few drops of Maggie seasoning to your bowl of stew. This sauce is a staple in every home in Central Europe.

Typically enjoyed with cornbread, you will also appreciate a slice of multigrain bread or a bun with this vegetable loaded stew.
Consider serving a side salad of your choice with this dish. I recommend a vinaigrette based shredded vegetable or green lettuce salad. The vinegar flavors are great in combination with the stew.
