    TL;DR

This recipe was inspired by my cousin Christina, who brought a batch of puff pastry pinwheels to one of our family gatherings a few years ago.

I enhanced the recipe by adding easy flavors, turning this recipe into a budget-friendly and effortless last-minute appetizer or brunch idea.

You can prepare these with a few kitchen staples. At least I always have cream cheese or bacon in my fridge because who doesn't like crispy cooked bacon (right?!) and cream cheese adds that delightful creamy layer to the pinwheels.

    Ingredient Notes

    • Puff Pastry — Get a large puff pastry dough sheet, which can be rolled in (not the small square ones). I prefer refrigerated puff pastry rolls. Frozen ones need to be thawed, and they get soggy.
    • Cream Cheese — I use plain Philadelphia cream cheese, but you can use flavored ones too (e.g., green onion cream cheese).
    • Shredded Cheese — Your favorite shredded cheese. I like super cheesy ones, such as mozzarella shredded cheese.
    • Bacon Pieces — I use uncooked smoked and salted small bacon cubes because that's what I get, and I like the taste. You can use precooked bacon pieces too. Raw bacon should be cut small so that it bakes crisp in the oven, adding to the flavor and texture experience.
    • Salt and Black Pepper — Salt is optional, and I'd skip it if your bacon is super salty.
    • Chives — Freshly chopped, used as a topping to serve them. Adds color and freshness.

We love these bacon and cream cheese-filled baked pinwheels at family gatherings as a snack or appetizer. These also make top game day bites!

You can prepare them too as part of a brunch spread. Think of Mother's or Father's Day or making a Sunday morning special.

    Storing

Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 2-3 days. You can warm them up in the oven on a lower heat setting so that they gradually warm up again.

To freeze, prepare the pinwheels as instructed but do not bake them. Instead, place them next to each other on a tray and the tray in the freezer so that they freeze hard. Once frozen hard, take them out and place them into a freezer container to freeze them.

To bake frozen pinwheels, place them frozen on a baking sheet and just bake them as per the instructions, but add another 15 to 20 minutes or more to the baking time until they thaw and bake all in one go.
