Here is what you will need to make these amazingly delicious ham and cheese puff pastry hand pies. Find the detailed US and metric measurements in the recipe card below,
- Puff pastry sheet - I simply use store bought puff pastry sheets, but you can use a homemade version too
- Cheese slice - a flavorful stringy cheese
- Ham slice - other cold cuts and cured meats can be used too instead, such as Spanish chorizo or salami.
- Oregano or Marjoram Herb
- Egg
🔪 How to make it?
I love these stuffed puff pastry hand pies because they come together easily.
I show you here how I make them. You can find the recipe with detailed instructions in the recipe card further below. Watch the video (pop up) to help you make this.
Step 1
Cut the puff pastry sheet into 6.
Place ham, cheese slice over each other and season with oregano or marjoram.
Step 2
Fold in the ham and then fold the pastry into a pocket.
Seal ends by twisting the ends along the full line.
Step 3
Lightly cut into the top of your savory pocket pies and brush with egg wash.
Bake, cool a bit, and enjoy.
🍴 Serving
These ham and cheese hand pies make for a perfect snack. I served them up at small gatherings too and parties. Everyone always loved them!
They make for great meal prep too if you want to take them to your workplace to have for breakfast.
Just bake them freshly in the morning, wrap them in parchment and enjoy homemade food at work.
Because these are so versatile, you might want to surprise your loved ones for breakfast or brunch at home with a freshly baked set of puff pastry hand pies.
🍱 Storing
They are good left out for up to 1 day. Store them in your fridge, and they will be good for 2 days.
You can also freeze your stuffed hand pies to bake them later. To do that, you simply need to prepare the hand pies as per instructions. Then place them next to each other on a tray, place them into your fridge and wait for them to freeze hard.
Take them from the tray and store them in a freezer-friendly bag. To thaw and cook, simply place them into your fridge and allow them to thaw overnight.
Later, place them on a tray next to each other, keep about 1-2 inches between each.
Bake them as per instructions at 350 Fahrenheit/ 180 C for about 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.
💭 FAQs
Yes, you can, but your hand pies won't turn out that fluffy light.
It can be tedious to make puff pastry from scratch, but it can also be very rewarding. The taste is better in homemade puff pastry, but it's also much more work. If you want a quick fix, use store-bought puff pastry.
Steam gets trapped on the inside and the bottom will turn out a bit soggy. You can make deeper cuts into the top of your hand pies so that steam can escape, and the pastry bottom will perhaps turn out less soggy, but there is no guarantee. If the bottom is soggy, that's ok too, it will be still cooked through. You can also bake them for another 2-3 minutes to reduce the sogginess.
To make this vegetarian, skip the ham and just use cheese as a filling. To make this vegan, use vegan cheese slices as a filling and use simply water instead of egg to brush at the end over your puff pastry.
Yes! You may sprinkle sesame seeds (black or white), poppy seeds (black or white), or some other seeds such as pumpkin seeds over your freshly brushed hand pies.

📖 Recipe
Ham and Cheese Puff Pastry Hand Pies
Ingredients
- 1 Puff Pastry Sheet
- 6 Slices Cheese
- 6 Slices Ham
- 2 Teaspoon Oregano Dried or Marjoram
- 1 Egg
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 Fahrenheit/ 180 Celsius.
- Place a parchment paper over your baking tray and spread or roll out the puff pastry over the parchment paper.1 Puff Pastry Sheet
- Cut puff pastry into 6 same-sized rectangular.
- Place a ham slice, a cheese slice over each puff pastry rectangular. Sprinkle some oregano or marjoram over that.6 Slices Cheese, 6 Slices Ham, 2 Teaspoon Oregano Dried
- Fold the ham a bit in if it's larger than the rectangular, and fold the dough from one end to another into a pocket.
- Seal the ends by twisting the corner dough a bit in, bit by bit, along the complete end line. That way the ham and cheese are well sealed into the pocket and the cheese won't come out. (see video)
- Cut lightly into the top of each pocket to make a design of your choosing.
- Break an egg into a bowl and mix it up. This is your egg wash. Spread it over your puff pastry pockets with the help of a pastry brush.1 Egg
- Place the baking steet into the oven and bake your pockets at 350 Fahrenheit/ 180 Celsius for about 10-12 minutes or until they turn golden brown on top.
