I combine Spirulina with Banana because, well, that's what people used to request for the most when I used to prepare Spirulina Smoothies in our former Café.

Spirulina is for you if you love to try new things, and you are looking to add dietary nutritional value to your breakfast morning food routine.

Some years ago, I met a man called Hendrik who was living in Auroville, Pondicherry, India. I think, he was Danish.

He had come for a coffee in our restaurant in Goa, carrying a bag of products.

He was obviously promoting something, or he wouldn't have tried to start a chat with us, explaining something about Spirulina powder and that he was the one who started to grow and harvest Spirulina in Auroville, India.

He showed and explained, and it started to dawn to me that I had read in the past about mysterious algae called Spirulina.

    Spirulina Smoothie Recipe with Banana

    What exactly is Spirulina?

Spirulina is a blue-green alga which grows naturally in mineral-rich lakes around the globe.

It is one of the oldest inhabitants on earth, appearing first more than 3.6 billion years ago.

Our ancients new back then its nourishing properties and so it was cultivated in Africa, America, and the Middle East.

Spirulina was rediscovered in the 1960 and has been since that intensely tested.

The NASA and the European Space Agency use nowadays Spirulina as space food, and the FAO proclaimed Spirulina as “The Best Food of Tomorrow”.

What type of Spirulina should you get?

Always buy sun dried organic Spirulina, to prevent taking in toxins and heavy metals.

The algae are mostly sold as a green loose powder, I got mine in capsules.

Hence, you can easily add the powder to your daily dishes, as long as it is not cooked food because heat destroys the nutrients.

I prefer and enjoy my spirulina smoothie, it's refreshing, slightly giving a bubblegum flavor and it's deliciously unique.

You can turn your spirulina into a spirulina smoothie bowl too and add Chia seeds, dried berries, sliced almonds and similar. Be creative!

I've heard of spirulina, but only because I go to health food stores sometimes and it's always there, touted as a health booster. it's funny how you discovered it from an old man in India, I never realised it was an ayurvedic thing!

I really loved this post. My husband has hypothyroidism and spirulina is good for him. However, I can't find this in Hong Kong. I am going on  a trip to India (B'lore) very soon. Which brand is the best? Thanks for the post.

I actually have heard of it, but never tried taking/using it.  I will keep an eye out- sounds like a healthy shake.

I used to take spirulina tablets and they were awful. This sounds like a much nicer way to get spirulina into your body! 🙂

Thanks Helene for the mention! Spirunila capsules were my daily multi vitamin dose some time back, have stopped it for now. Somehow I feel I could rely more on fresh veggies and fruits than gulping tablets. And thanks for this lovely info..have to look out for spirinula powder for this drink.

Auroville is selling in india the best quality spirulina, they even have crunchy versions of the powder and spirulina with amla mixed as powder. lots of choices, so capsules is not the only option. I ll buy the next time the powder version too, since it is nice to add the spirulina to cold dishes. I ll try out some dishes in the future and I ll surely share it with u all if its outstanding. 😉
