A homemade chili seasoning to make the best chili at home, but without the added salt.
No salt equals less sodium, which is suitable for a sodium-free diet/ low-salt diet.

TL;DR
I never understood why some seasoning blends contained added salt or even oil. Sure, oil at least helps in blooming spices when heated, and it's a flavor enhancer, but salt isn't a necessary addition.
A meat rub always needs to include salt, but a simple seasoning blend is used to flavor a dish, such as this chili seasoning.
You can always adjust the salt when tasting the dish, right?
Besides, we were dealing with some high blood pressure in the family, and the salt topic came up. Therefore, I came up with this salt-free chili seasoning!
Ingredient Notes
- Garlic Powder — Regular garlic powder or roasted or smoked garlic powder. I like regular because it doesn't collide with the other flavors, but you can experiment around.
- Onion Powder — The same goes with the onion powder: regular, smoked, roasted.
- Paprika Smoked — Needs to be smoked for your chili, but you can substitute with sweet paprika powder too.
- Cayenne — To add some heat.
- Cumin Powder — To build up your chili seasoning, this is an essential ingredient.
- Cinnamon Powder — A small quantity of cinnamon adds sweetness. Try to get cinnamon and not cassia. Unfortunately, most cinnamon in stores is actually true cassia.
- Black Pepper
- Oregano — Can't do without oregano. Use Italian oregano. I haven't tried it with Mexican oregano, but that might change the flavor profile (please let me know if you try it!).
- Allspice Ground — My mystery ingredient. Allspice is usually sold as whole seeds, but they are super easy to crush in a mortar and pestle.

Uses
Just throw some homemade chili seasoning into your chili dish as you are preparing the meal. It doesn't matter which chili, this seasoning blend is suitable for most chilis.
I add it when I'm throwing in the other ingredients, such as the ground beef or tomato (or whatever chili you are prepping).
My current favorite chilis include the shredded chicken chili and the fall pumpkin chili.
Storing
Use glass jars with a lid to store your spices, always, because glass is better than plastic, and your spice mixes need to be visible from the outside.
Label the jar with the name of the blend and the date when you made it. Most blends don't spoil per se, but they lose their oomph in time. Therefore, it's always better to prepare a smaller batch.
Storing them in a jar keeps them away from humidity and mold. Besides, they keep better that way.
Place the spice blend in a place in your pantry where you can see it and won't forget about it (not at the back of your cupboard!).
