Serving
This is a typical party app. They are great for any celebration such as Christmas, New Years', Game Day, Easter, Halloween, or Thanksgiving.
I love to add some of my homemade fig jam, onion jam or cranberry jam over mine before I serve them up as little amuse bouche bites.
It tastes so much better with a jam!
Try to serve them warm. To do that, just keep them in a warm oven and take them out on serving trays a batch at a time.
That said, I think the little puff pastry squares, just like my chicken puff pastry triangles, also make a great breakfast, brunch, or TV/ Playstation game day snack.
Prepare in Advance and Leftovers
You can make these savory bacon cream cheese apps in advance.
Bake them and keep them in your oven until you are ready to serve them up. Just warm them up a bit before you serve up your puff pastry squares.
You don't need to freeze them. The thawing process would take longer than making them with a store-bought puff pastry sheet.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in your fridge and us up within a few days. Reheat in the oven or microwave.
Shouldn't you have mentioned to cook the bacon first. And isn't 350° an incredible temp for puff pastry? Mine are taking forever.
Hi Cynthia, small bacon pieces cook through in the oven when used as a topping, they don't need separate cooking. The key is to use small pieces. 350 Fahrenheit for 10+ minutes is plenty of time to bake small puff pastry sheets. Did you preheat your oven properly? The oven has to be hot enough before placing in the puff pastry squares or else they won't bake properly and get even soggy due to lower temperatures at the beginning of the baking cycle. Of course every oven is slightly different, and hard-to-see electricity fluctuations can also be a reason why the heat might be distributed differently in your oven. Make sure to set the oven settings to “bake”. Larger than normal puff pastry sheets may take a little longer to bake too. In that case, keep them in for up to 20 minutes or until golden brown. I hope this helps.
my puff pastry appears smaller than yours, does it have to be rolled out?
Hi Donna. Do, I don't roll out store bought packed puff pastry sheets. When you say smaller, do you mean your store bought puff pastry is shorter? It highly depends on the brand and every so often the country. You can still cut them to your preferred size, it doesn't have to be exact squares, it's ok if they are slightly rectangular.
How appetizing, really different. Thank you for sharing.
You are welcome, Mary. 🙂
If you add Jam at what point do you top the squares…before it after baking? I’m anxious to try this recipe with a honey fig jam!
Hi Roberta, I would just add the jam after baking as a topping.
Wouldn't it be much easier to top the Puff Pastry with cream cheese and bacon, THEN cut into equal pieces ???
You can do it that way too. Either way works. I personally prefer cutting first and then top the squares, just as my mini pizza bites. I found it to be less messy that way, so I don't end up with cream cheese all over the place. But maybe it's easier for you the way you described it, it's your choice. 🙂
