Flavored water with fresh orange fruits is one of my favorite infused waters that I make all the time at home.
I show you how to make this flavored water in ease with my video and photos below.
TL;DR
Orange Infused Water is a fruit infused water. That means the water is flavored with a hint of natural orange flavors.
Other similar fruit infused waters include watermelon water and strawberry water.
You might have come across waters like this in a spa or health center. Fruit infused waters are also known as detox waters, spa waters or wellness waters.
In places like Austria in Europe, they are part of the commercial water bottle shelf selection.
We can purchase out of the box fruit-flavored waters from brands such as Römerquelle and Gasteiner Water (water from Bad Gastein). Different shades of flavors appear commercially, such as prickly pear and pineapple water.
But today I'll show you how you can prepare orange infused waters without special equipment at home.
Ingredients
Thankfully, getting pure and fresh orange citrus flavors into a bottle of water is simple enough.
- Oranges — Fresh oranges. They need to be untreated, that means without pesticides. I used naval oranges in the photos and video, but you can use any other orange variety too, including blood oranges.
- Water — Plain tab water or mineral water, whichever you prefer. Technically, you can try using soda (seltzer) too, but the fruits will be pushed to the top all the time due to the carbon dioxide, so your water won't infuse that well.
- Ice Cubes (optional)
Knowledge Base: Oranges labeled as organic or BIO are not always pesticides-free. Regulations differ between countries, and therefore there is no set norm to lean on.
How to make it?
Step 1
I wash my oranges in vinegar or citric acid water to get rid of impurities and pesticides. I recommend you do the same.
Pour water with vinegar or citric acid into a bowl over your orange. Scrub with a soft vegetable brush.
Step 2
Cut off the orange ends and discard the ends.
Cut the orange into half, quarters and then into thick slices.
Step 3
Place orange slices into a bottle. Top up with fresh water.
Leave to infuse for at least two hours or more in your fridge.
Step 4
Leave to infuse for at least two hours or more in your fridge.
Step 5
Pour into a glass and add ice cubes if you like.

Equipment
As you might have noticed, I never use special fruit infusion bottles. There is a good reason for that!
These infusion bottles are equipped with an infusion basket, where you place your fruits in and then the surrounding water gets infused.
Back in the day, the infusion baskets were made like metal strainers, but today they are just plastic strainers with a few holes.
The problem is the cleaning of the infusion part. Tiny fruit pieces can get stuck and that can be a health hazard, if it hasn't been cleaned thoroughly.
Besides, I, personally, don't see the use of buying a separate special bottle just so that I can infuse my water with fruits and if tiny pieces of fruit end up in my water, I'm fine with that. My bottles are cleaned well after every use.
Nonetheless, you are free to get a Fruit Infuser Water bottle. There is a good choice of travel or sports infuser water bottles.
Uses
I use my orange water throughout the day, whenever I feel thirsty and I need a rehydration break from my laptop work.
These are great too on a road trip during the hotter summer months. My sister makes a batch to go to the gym.
Storing
I keep my bottle in the refrigerator to cool. That keeps the flavored water fresh.
I do this also in a cold climate because I would rather not give harmful bacteria growth a chance. The cool fridge climate keeps these buggers at bay.
The citrus water can be left for up to 2 days in your fridge with the fruit in the water.
If you intend to store the infused water for a longer period of time, I recommend straining the water after day two.
I love drinking orange water, so I usually finish a bottle within a few hours or a day. In that case, I top it up with fresh water to take it to day 2 and make the most of my orange slices.
Besides, the orange slices are edible once they have fulfilled their infusion purpose. I eat them because I'm all for zero waste in my kitchen.
