TL;DR
Fresh passion fruit juice can be daunting to prepare from scratch if you are new to this tropical fruit. But it actually is a super simple fruit to turn into a refreshing fruit juice.
Ripe fruits are cut into two and the fruit pulp is scooped out with a spoon with the seeds.
We have been preparing this juice without a special fruit juicer. Instead, you will just need a kitchen blender to make this exotic passion fruit juice. The juice will be ready within 5-10 minutes with this simple method, and you won't have to buy a kitchen juicer.

Process Overview
Step 1
Cut your passion fruit into half and open it up to reveal the fruit pulp.

Step 2
Spoon out the fruit pulp with seeds and collect the pulp in a bowl.

Step 3
Add the passion fruit pulp with the water and sugar to a blender jar and blend smooth.
Strain the juice so that you don't have large seed pieces in the juice. Serve cooled.

📖 Recipe

BEST Passion Fruit Juice
Ingredients
- 6 piece Passion Fruits
- 3 cups Water
- 3 Tablespoons Sugar optional, taste test to adjust
- Ice Cubes
Instructions
- Keep a bowl ready to collect the fruit pulp and another to collect the shells. Cut the passion fruits into two.
- Scoop out the pulp with the seeds with a spoon and collect in the prepared bowl. Discard the shells.
- Place the fruit pulp with seeds into a blender jar. *See notesAdd water and sugar.
- Blend to a smooth juice.
- Take a fine strainer and strain your juice. That way the seed pieces will be collected.
- Pour the juice into a glass and serve with ice cooled.
Notes
- You can add sugar, you don't have to. I add some sugar because I used yellow passion fruits and those are sourer (see in post for more info)
- You can strain your pulp or juice from the seeds, you don't have to. The seeds are actually nice crunchy and can add texture. I choose to add the seeds to the blender and to strain them afterward because it's fast and easier to strain them that way. Straining through the thick pulp can be time-consuming and you might end up wasting some pulp.

Serving and Storing Tips
Serve cooled with ice cubes as is or mixed with other fruit juices. Passion fruit is rather tart, so I like mixing it with sweeter fruits such as mango or peaches to add balance to the flavor profile.
This juice can be prepared ahead of time as it doesn't spoil that fast. The juice is good for 5-6 days in your fridge when cooled.
You can freeze it into batches too. Don't forget to thaw the juice by leaving it out over night.
FAQs
A passion fruit is the name of a round tropical fruit. The fruit is also known as Maracuja in some parts of the world. The exotic fruit grows in tropical environments on vines. A thick, spongy kind of shell, with a smooth, glossy skin on the outside, encloses the fruit pulp on the inside. The fruit pulp is in a deep orange shade and includes large, crunchy seeds. The seeds are edible and totally worth eating as well as they add texture, and they are rather nutritious.
You most commonly get 2 kinds of Maracuja fruits in this world. The yellow and the purple Maracuja. The yellow variety is larger, and the vines grow much thicker than the purple passion fruit. The fruit flesh of a yellow Maracuja is quite tart and sour. Tough, the riper it gets, the sweeter the yellow Maracuja becomes. Yet the yellow variety is preferred in fresh juices and in preserves. The deep purple fruits are smaller in size, and the flesh is much sweeter than the yellow variety. The leaves look a bit like grape leaves.
You can tell if a passion fruit is ripe by looking at the skin and shell. A passion fruit is ripe when it gets wrinkles. You can consume your passion fruits when the skin is smooth or when it's wrinkled. It should be either yellow (not green) or deep purple (not light purple) in color. A yellow variety of passion fruit without wrinkles might turn out to be rather sour. The wrinkles are an indication that the fruit pulp will become sweeter in time. The fruits are usually picked before they ripen fully in a light purple or green/yellow state.
Fresh passion fruits are common in large grocery supermarkets in cities. You should be able to come across one of the two varieties at a Walmart, Target, or Carrefour. You might be able to come across passion fruits at an ethnic store, such as a South American, Caribbean, African, or Asian store. The fruits grow in California and Hawaii in the US, and the main season is from May to September. In Europe, passion fruits are sold all year round as "Maracuja" in major grocery store chains.Passion fruits can be most commonly bought fresh all year round in places like Australia, Southeast Asia, India, Colombia, Brazil, other South American countries, and the Caribbean.

I have the yellow maracuja vine. Last summer I picked up about 50 fruits daily. Gave away lots. I scraped out the pulp and froze it in ziplock bags for later use.
That is what I do, I collect the pulp and freeze it. But wow, 50 a day is a lot. Lucky you!
If you ever grew them you will have a lot! 🙋🏾♀️💜

Passion fruit or Maracuja (botanical name: Passiflora edulis) contains an alkaloid passiflorine, a flavonoid chryisine. A tea can be made by boiling (decoction) of 2-4 leaves (10g) in a cup (150ml) of water and consumed at bed time, which helps to relax after a long day.
That's interesting, I had no idea. Thanks for sharing
