It is the season of the giant jackfruit and that’s why today it’s time for more Jackfruit Recipes. Jackfruit pulp chunks are fruity and can be enjoyed on their own, yet I wanted more delicious reasons to enjoy our endless harvest and at the same time celebrate the humble jackfruit.
I put together a collection of jackfruit recipes further below, which are carefully selected and curated with only vegetarian, meatless jackfruit preparations.
Grown Jackfruit trees, with their massive build can have about 200 Jackfruits growing on the tree trunk and on brunches. These are crazy numbers when you think that some of these jackfruits tend to get over 40 kgs big!
Luckily for us, the jackfruit flesh is a very tasty fruit to consume during the hot Indian summer months. However, because of the fruit size and it’s monstrosity, I am often while just confused about how to use this humble fruit in my cooking.
The Jackfruit is a native fruit from the Western Ghats/West Coast of India. A jackfruit tree grows very well and quickly in any hot tropical climate. The fruit is also important for the food security in this world for obvious reasons.
In Goa, the jackfruit is known as Pannas पाननस (it’s one of the first konkani words that I learned), it’s very omnipresent and part of the culture.
You can find the fruit being harvested and sold from March to June in local markets such as the Mapusa market and you will notice that there are two jackfruit variations. One is with harder and the other with softer flesh.
Cows are often while fed with jackfruit flesh as it grows in abundance. We tend to give the fruits away to neighbors and friends. You can feed a whole village with jackfruits!
When you have a jackfruit tree in your garden, your only worry is that one of those enormous jackfruits might fall on your car or even break your roof tiles. The damage with 40 kg can be big.
Alone one jackfruit, with 20 kgs, is way too much flesh for two people. I don’t have a big freezer so I would need to consume it quickly and to be honest I don’t want to just eat jackfruit!
We eat the jackfruit raw as it is, most of the time, and you might have noticed that I have never posted a recipe for jackfruit here. I decided to change this and that’s why I compiled this collection of carefully selected vegetarian jackfruit recipes. It’s suppose to motivate me too!
How to prepare a Jackfruit?
Besides the fruit being so big, which makes it to be honestly daunting for me to prepare it in anyway possible, the fruit flesh tends to have a very sticky glue-like substance around it. Because of that glue substance, you will turn into a sobbing and crying child when tackling your jackfruit preparation like any-other fruit.
However, there is a solution to that. You need to rub some oil into your hands and on the knife, which you will use to cut the jackfruit into pieces. Locals in Goa use coconut oil for example.
That is how you cut a jackfruit into small pieces easily and quickly. Another fruit in the same family, the breadfruit, has the same glue-like substance when cutting the fruit flesh and the same oil technique is used.
Of course, if your jackfruit is canned, then somebody else – most probably in South East Asia – took the trouble for you and you can just go about this collection of jackfruit recipes.
